Physical Therapy is the process of developing, maintaining or restoring maximum movement (range of motion) and functional ability.
By restoring normal movement and a normal biomechanical motion, physical therapy can reduce pain and increase function allowing you to resume activities that may have been painful before.
A physical therapist may use, but is not limited to, manual therapy interventions including joint mobilizations and massage; therapeutic exercise to facilitate strengthening and regaining range of motion; neuromuscular reeducation to assist in restoring proper movement patterns and biomechanics; and therapeutic modalities, including but not limited to ultrasound, electrical stimulation and iontophoresis.
According to Texas state law, physical therapists can perform only an evaluation when you do not have a medical practitioner’s prescription/referral. In order to begin treatment after the evaluation, physical therapists must obtain a signed plan of care/prescription from a medical practitioner. A medical practitioner can be a physician, a physician’s assistant, a podiatrist, a nurse practitioner, a dentist or a chiropractor. If you already have a prescription/referral for physical therapy services, you can choose the physical therapy clinic from which you want to receive services. We would love to be your first choice!
A highly trained and licensed physical therapist will evaluate your condition, including your medical history, pain levels and locations. Your functional limitations will also be discussed. You physical therapist, in conjunction with you, will develop a treatment plan to get you back on the road to recovery. As you are an integral part of this process, feedback from you during the evaluation and treatment is critical. Physical therapy is a team effort between you and your therapist.
Loose fitting clothes are optimal and will depend upon your injury. For example, if you have a shoulder problem, a t-shirt or tank top will work. For a knee problem, loose pants or shorts. We also provide shorts and gowns if you forget to bring loose fitting clothes.
Our philosophy at Atlas PT is “no pain, no pain”. Unfortunately, sometimes there is discomfort. We ask that you notify us immediately if there is pain or discomfort so we can modify the activity to keep you more comfortable.
Do I need a prescription/referral? Texas is one of the few states left that still requires a prescription from a physician to receive Physical Therapy treatment. A Physical Therapist may evaluate an individual without this prescription but in order to begin any treatment, the prescription must be obtained. It is important to remember that if you are under the care of a physician and require Physical Therapy, you have the freedom to choose which physical therapy clinic to receive your treatment. Our Physical Therapists are highly trained health care professionals and are well qualified to evaluate a patient’s condition, assess his or her physical therapy needs and, if appropriate, safely and effectively treat the patient. Physical Therapists recognize when it is appropriate to refer patients to other health care professionals for consultation if needed.
Atlas Physical Therapy accepts most major insurance plans. We are a participating provider in the Medicare program, but at this time do not participate in the Medicaid program. We accept most Commercial Insurances, Workers’ Compensation and Auto Insurance. We are participating providers for most major group plans. Click here to see our growing list of insurance companies.
Physical therapy benefits are sometimes a separate benefit from your normal “office visit” copay. Some plans require only a copay while others require you to meet your deductible and then a certain amount of coinsurance until your out-of-pocket maximum has been met. Some plans require prior authorization or have a visit or dollar amount limitation placed on a plan year.
Please contact us if you need help in determining your insurance benefits.
We also offer affordable options for patients who choose to pay for services directly.

“Because of numerous surgeries over the last several years, I’ve had to go through many hours of physical therapy. I’ve found that Atlas Physical Therapy is one of the best, if not the best, clinic to go to. Vicky Bledsoe provides excellent service – from the time you make your first call for an appointment to the time that you ‘graduate’ from therapy.“If you want care above and beyond your expectations, Atlas PT is the place to receive it. I felt like an important brother in a large family. Most importantly, a lifetime of lower back pain is now manageable, and for the amount of arthritis I have, my pain is rarely noticeable. Thanks Vicki!”
